  • Italian food = heavy tomato sauce

That wasn’t my original claim. I said it would be impossible to imagine Italian food (as a whole unit) without tomatoes.

You can say a similar thing about Indian food and hot peppers. Yes, there are loads of Indian dishes and staples that don’t have any hot peppers in them but when you ask a random person to think of Indian food they’ll almost certainly be thinking of dishes with mild chilis at the very least.

As a side note, you’ve also confirmed my observation that Italian food is the most heavily-gatekeeped cuisine on the planet, and Italian-American the most disdained.

  • Pasta dishes containing tomatoes are eaten in every region of Italy. The two most recognizable Italian dishes in the world are easily spaghetti marinara and pizza Margherita. Northern Italian food, with its cured meats, hard cheeses, risottos, and stews are far less well known and recognizable as Italian cuisine (not to mention distinct from French, Swiss, and Alpine German cuisine) to anyone outside of Europe, not just Americans.

  • you’d technically have a good person who was a billionaire, so my declaration would be wrong

And if we instead create a program of hyper inflation so that even minimum wage workers become billionaires overnight, the world will be filled with bad people? Or perhaps this idea is so simplistic as to be meaningless.

There are no good or bad people. There are only good and bad deeds.

  • Well I think employed 21-year olds are a lot less likely to have any savings at all (mostly student loans) and also more likely to be working in a job with no retirement plan (working at Subway or Starbucks). Combining their situation to a 64-year old in an office job or a skilled trade is still pretty misleading.

Yes, it’s a huge problem that young people have all this student debt and lack of savings and high living expenses. But we’re not going to be able to analyze that by lumping all their numbers together with older people. If we want to make comparisons we need separate numbers.

  • There are loads of guys who want nothing to do with the fascist movement, are not radicalized, and have no interest in harassing or assaulting women.

All the discourse online would have you believe that you’re either an ardent feminist champion of DEI or a MAGA-screaming, ICE-boosting ultra-fascist, with no room whatsoever in between. In the real world there’s just a lot of regular people walking around going about their lives, except now they hesitate when before they might not have.

Asking a stranger out for coffee was an incredibly rare event in the past. Now it’s become pretty much extinct as a practice. The dating app conglomerate Match Group couldn’t be happier because now they can cash in even more on people’s loneliness.

I’m not going to say that the #metoo movement is solely to blame for this phenomenon. A lot of other social trends have headed in the same direction. It’s another brick in the wall.
